In November 1916 Mr. Reddihough, the owner of Farnhill Hall, approached Farnhill Parish Council with an offer. In order to stop people having to enter the drive-way of the Hall to use the footpath leading down to the canal at Milking Hill bridge, he would arrange for a new gate to be created to allow direct access to the path from the road. The parish council agreed to this suggestion, not least because - as noted by one of the councillors and reported in the local press - the existing stile was in a very poor condition. The gate was made by Charlie Hill, a joiner of High Farnhill. Its design led to it being known locally as "the Chinese gate" and for over 100 years it served its purpose well; although - as the photograph below, taken in 2016, shows - by its centenary it was in need of some attention. Happily, in recent months Richard Law of Farnhill has renovated the old gate and restored it to its former appearance. Where possible the wood of the old gate was re-used. Richard says "The new gate is really a repair, as about a quarter of the old oak timber has been incorporated where possible. Although there was a good deal of rot, it is surprising how solid old oak is just below the surface." Here's hoping the gate serves for another 100 years.
